Amber Alexander

Amber Alexander – Creator/Writer/Editor of Beauty &The Street, is a 19 year old college student from Brooklyn, NY. She has done PR work for a street wear Fashion Show, coordinated community events, and currently aspires to be an editor for an influential Magazine. Someday Amber would also like to start her very own publication! She’s made headway towards achieving this via B&TS, her blog about Fashion and Beauty Trends, Entertainment news, and Celebrity Style. This past week, she sat down with MMHighlights to give us some insight into her world.

What is your earliest memory that you can remember where you knew you wanted to work in the fashion industry?

· AA

I remember reading an article about Anna Wintour and her accomplishments. At the time I knew I wanted to pursue a career in Fashion but did not know exactly what. After reading the article though, it finally hit me. THAT’s what I want to do with my life.

· MMH
Which magazines do you read?

· AA

I love Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Teen Vogue, ELLE, my old Suede magazines [that I read] over and over lol. I only own two copies of Suede but I love them dearly! Sometimes I pick up Allure, Marie Claire, or Lucky.

· MMH
Which magazine is your favorite?

· AA

It’s hard to decide which one is my fav, but if I had to choose I would say Harper’s Bazaar.

· MMH
Have you ever worked with a publication?

· AA

No, I haven’t yet.

· MMH
If you had a choice of all publications in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why?

· AA

It’s a tough decision between Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, and ELLE! They are all iconic and influential publications in the fashion world. However, I would have to choose Harper’s Bazaar because of it’s sophisticated perspective of Beauty, Fashion and Pop Culture. It was also the first American Fashion mag and I want to be a part of history!

· MMH
What are your short term and long term goals?

· AA

Short term, I’d love to write for a Fashion Publication (or more than one over time). Long term, I would like to start my own Publication some day.

· MMH
Are there any special projects you would like to work on in print?

· AA

I have an idea that I will be working on over the course of the next two years.

· MMH
What do you see in the stores that you think is really great?

· AA

Right now I am seeing lots of over sized and men style cardigans, sweaters, and blazers. Women do not have to dress skin tight to look sexy! One can be absolutely chic in relaxed, loose clothing.

· MMH
What is one item of men/women’s clothing that is worth the investment?

· AA

For both, a great, sturdy pair of shoes is the best investment. Inferior quality footwear has to be the worst decision ever.

· MMH
What are the most important accessories men/women should wear?

· AA

For a man, I believe his most important accessory should be a time piece. It’s classic and stylish. For a woman, her most important accessory is her handbag of course. A purse (and shoes) can totally make or break the outfit!

· MMH
What are some common fashion mistakes that men/women make?

· AA

There are so many! I must say that the most common fashion mistake is wearing something that everyone else is wearing because it’s “cool” instead of finding what fits you best. Somethings just aren’t for everyone! What looks good on Jack and Jill may not suite you at all.
